week 11

This week we have had to watch the trigger video "Super Size Me". It was only a short version of the whole movie - maybe I should watch the whole video!

In the chat we talked about:

1. What does the video show about eating habits in the modern society?
2. What are the main risks of these eating habits, but also what is so compelling about them (otherwise nobody would show this behavior)?
3. How could a Social Worker try to prevent the development of eating patterns as we can see them in the video? How can she or he be active on an individual and on society level?
4. What were your own feelings while watching the video?
5. Binge eating & mc donald's
6. Is it possible that such a movie could change something?
...and we all made the same experiences/ have had the same feelings!
1.
- the people eat too much and too fast nowadays; many people are addicted to fast food
- the eating habits changed enormously, its not like in the past, when the whole family was sitting together
today, many people don't have even time to prepare meals or the don't have time to sit down and enjoy it; many eat while they are walking or driving to work
- many people eat unhealthy; they don't eat enough vegetables and fruits
2.
- many people get addicted to fast food; maybe because of the ingredients or maybe it is easier to buy (which is saving time) instead of preparing meals
- many have to rush, so they eat too much in less time
- the effects concerning health were horrible!
-> At the end he was gaining weight, has had heart-, lung-, kidney- and liver problems, he felt depressed without any reason, he felt tired and has had a loss of libido, he has had high cholesterol and vitamin deficiency (50% less), he felt weak and unmotivated, he got more often headache and problems with the stomach (it began on his 3rd day of his experiment), he got  pressure in the chest...

- it is so compelling that you don't need a lot of time for going to the market and preparing meal
- it is a nice atmosphere (e.g. mc café)
- you think you eat healthy because the advertisement shows you a perfect picture of mc donald's and his fresh and healthy products (green fields, healthy cows...-> happy farmer & happy cows)
- some famous people make advertising for mc donald's (e.g. Heidi Klum)
3.
a Social Worker could...
- warn about the risks and the restrictions you get when you eat too much fast food
- show the "Super Size Me" video
- go shopping healthy food and cook with them and could show them that cooking and eating together makes a lot of fun and could show that it mustn't be expensive to buy the products
- inform pupils (the sooner the better!) because a lot of them eat unhealthy things from the cafeterias; also the schools should show more responsibility towards the pupils and students
4.
- some things were disgusting
- I was shocked that a persons health could be ruined within 30 days

5. Binge eating & mc donald's
-  mc donald's is perfect for people to satisfy their binges (large amounts, you can eat at home...)
- there is no stigmatizing when you go to fast food restaurants

6. Is it possible that such a movie could change something?
- it depends on the mind and willing of a person
- and it depends on if the person get help from friends or family members

week 9 and 10

We have had to do a short wiki which was a very easy task ;-) and the following week we have had to work on Elle's paper. Watching this trigger video was strange because it is difficult to understand such a behavior and because it wasn't given enough information (family background...) why it happened that Elle died but in the Comer chapter we could also read about that is difficult to see behind the curtain!

For me it was a good experience to work on Elle's paper at the first weekend when we've got the task and not solving the task during the week because then you have to do a lot of other things!

week 7 and week 8

Yuhu, finally I was able to see (read ;-) again!
This week was so busy - I was reading scripts every day to be current again!
At the end of the week we have had our first multiple choice online test - wow, time was running even if I was good prepared but it was nearly impossible to check the given answers again and to tick off the one or two questions I wasn't sure of! Eventually it worked very well - if I ignore the time limit - and I could see that the result of busy studying has been worthwhile!

I made a profitable discovery!
When we've had social psychiatry I could use my  previous knowledge of our mental disorder online course and so I did understand the subject matter much better!

week 5 and week 6

I was knocked out longer then I expected!
I made an experience one can well do without - how it is when you participate on an online course where you have to read 20 or 40 pages a week and have to solve tasks nearly every week and then you fall ill! So, when you can't read anything it is nearly impossible to keep pace with something! In this time in particular it was good that I could at least listen to the screen lectures!
The next week I have to read a lot but at least I'm happy that the scripts are very interesting!

week 3 and week 4

My scheduling for this two weeks was getting out of control because I felt sick and I realized how much work it is to make up leeway! Yes, we have had two weeks time to read the chapter and to solve the task but I'm honest this reading is really time-consuming even if it is interesting to read - to lay it on the line, it is a lot! Parallel we have to read and arrange other things for other courses for example reading Schopenhauers' Parerga et Paralipomena and things like that!
Finally I also have to say something positive! I'm happy that I have the chance and the challenge to improve my english; one side benefit is, that after reading the chapters I'm thinking in english, maybe soon I will dream in english!

Short reflection concerning the group work:
We organized everything very well; everybody has had his part and we worked together through the script at the same time, which was very funny on Google docs, like many busy bees! (Google docs is great!)
At the end I also want to mention something important here - this was really a teamwork, thanks for the appreciation and the tolerance!

Week 2

Wow, this week we received the first specialized literature!
It is a quite interesting text but of course you need more time to read and understand this script as you would if it would be in german - but I'm sure that will only be in the beginning because you have to get familiar with specialized literature in english but I'm looking forward to the following scripts and tasks!
At the moment I have to look a few words up which costs a little bit time but one reason why I participate in this course is because I want to improve my english. The screen lecture was quite comprehensible and explicitly and manageable!
I'm looking forward what the other participants will say about the "balance" video! I hope my story for the SORC-scheme will be as interesting as the one about Marvin!

"Balance"

- maybe the people are reflecting our mind with his variety of nerve cells
- at the beginning there is a conjunction and interaction between every nerve cell
- suddenly the nerve cells loose their balance and the interaction is out of order because of a sudden
  event
- one nerve cell gets infected (box) because it is vulnerable
- than more nerve cells get infected (box is moving)
- the body with the other nerve cells (platform with the people which try to counterbalance) tries to
  compensate
- at the end it isn't possible to compensate and the other nerve cells get infected/ destroyed/ or loose there
  ability to work properly
- than the normal protection is getting lost

result: no balance, no possibility to compensate
